Brigittes Report Sommer 2004
Golden Gate Summer School in Bridgewater, Vermont

Monday, June 21, 2004

Today was my first day at school. School. That sounds a little bit strange to me. School is something for children and teenagers.

But now it’s me who’s going to take some lessons. And I hope Im going to learn a lot, as much as I can.

Although I was a little bit sad because Flavio had to leave this morning, I was looking forward to starting my first lesson. And I liked it. Well, I never had any doubts about it.

Time went by very fast and then it was already lunchtime. We had some sandwiches and fruit on the porch.

Afterwards, Rose and I went to Woodstock. We stopped by a hardware shop and then we looked for some DVDs at the libary. They didn’t have a lot to choose from but what we needed was Casablanca and that one we got. We also took another movie named "Frankie and Johnny". It’s with Michelle Pfeiffer and that other guy whose name I can’t remember right now. Anyway, the film is described as a comedy but I can’t remember having laughed while watching it. Well, it’s a long time ago, we will see. The only thing I know is that there are lots of good dialogs. And Michelle Pfeiffer is always worth seeing I think.

Rose and I also went to one of the galleries to look at some paintings. I liked the wooden ducks the most. They had plenty of them there. But I decided not to buy one. I didn’t like the prices at all.

We also went to several stores. They didn’t sell my favorite cookes anywhere. We bought some food for dinner and went back home.

I was really willing to start doing my homework, but while lying on my bed, reading the newspaper, some article about cheese, I fell asleep. I couldn’t resist closing my eyes.

Tuesday, June 22, 2004

In the morning I had my breakfast as usual. But I think it’s still worth a few words because it’s always very wonderfully served. You get real china and the knives and spoons are made of silver. I always feel like a princess. Unfortunately I’m seldom hungry in the morning but I enjoy it anyway.

Afterwards, I had my lessons. Grammar is a very hard subject. But I’m trying to tackle it.

For lunch we went to Grandma’s Home Cooking. Because of my upset stomach I only ate a soup, corn chowder.

After lunch I started doing my homework. It’s always a lot of homework. Not that I wouldn’t like doing it, but I never have enough time for everything. I could hardly concentrate. I was so cold. Outside it was gray and gloomy and dreary. Sometimes it was raining very hard. I actually like it that way. I can look out of my window while my mind is wandering. I can get new ideaas. And inside the house it’s nice and cozy.

Actually I wanted to stay at home: doing my homework, reading and writing... but Rose thought I should go with her to Rutland. There Rose wanted to go to a meeting.

On the way to Rutland Rose gave me a little history lesson: The vice president who had no phone and couldn’t be called to be told that he had become president. We also passed the house where once a man had lived with his family. But the family died and the man became heartbroken then. No one has ever lived in that house for a longer time. Maybe there are ghosts? You never know...

Somewhere between Bridgewater and Rutland, Rose and I had to pick up Ernst. While Rose was attending the meeting, Ernst and I went to do the grocery shopping. We were trying to do the food shopping. I always wanted to do some shopping at one of those big supermarkets, but while traveling around, there was no need.

Well, I was absolutely motivated. Ernst didn’ t seem to be. He hates doing any kind of shopping. And we had a long list because of the party that would take place the next day.

So first of all we had to make out the words. Then we had to find all the items. Neither of us had ever been in this supermarket before. When we finally found what we needed, we couldn’t decide. There was such a big choice of nearly everything. So, which one should we take and how much, what brand or just what’s on sale. We had a lot to discuss every time. And please, somebody has to tell me: Is there any need for at least 15 different boxes of Kleenex? Not to mention the prices or the butter or whatever. We saved a lot of money with the yogurt. We took the best ones, also the most expensive ones, but when you took ten of them you got a really good price, only $5.00. I guess this week we have a lot of yogurt to eat. But hey, we have all different flavors.

We also bought half a water melon. Kind of a big piece. Rose was shocked. But as of today, Wednesday, we’ve already eaten half the fruit. No need to be worried.

Oh, and for the housewarming party on Wednesday Ernst and I had to buy meat for the hamburgers. But how much? Rose didn’t tell us. So how much should we take?

Half a cow or better the whole one? Well, this was just a short report about my supermarket experience with Ernst. I could fill a book. However, it was fun and I laughed so much.

We got back home pretty late, so we had a late dinner. I also ate a big, big slice of watermelon. Red fruit were especially healthy, Rose told me.

I was very tired now, but want to try reading a few pages at least. But I fell asleep.

Wednesday, June 23, 2004

I was still tired in the morning. If I could I would sleep until noon. But I’m a hardworking student now, so I had to get up.

After lunch which we had on the porch, in the sun, I started doing my homework. The weather was nice. Sunny and pretty warm. Perfect for the housewarming party we had planned for the evening. More than ten people were supposed to come.

In the afternoon I went to The Mill. I had to bring my letters and postcards to the post office and I also had to buy some french baguettes.

I was looking around for a while, got to the bookstore and couldn’t resist buying a book. Again, Bill Bryson’s "Walk in the Woods". I hope it’s not too difficult to understand.

I got back home at about 5 p.m., was studying for a while and at 6 p.m. the party got started. BBQ time. I met a lot of people, meaning Rose’s family: sisters and brothers and neighbor and more. I had some nice talks. And I liked the punch Rose made. Oh, and I should mention Ernst’s hotdogs and hamburgers. How should I say? They got a little bit dark! You could also use the word burned. But who cared.

We had some dessert after and then some coffee and after all people had gone home, Rose, Ernst and I looked at the fireflies. They were glowing beautifully. Very nice. Now I’m lying in my bed, writing this report and looking forward to going to sleep. Good Night!

Thursday, June 24, 2004

This morning I had some problems getting up. The night before, after the housewarming party, I wrote a long report, also read a chapter in my book and finally went to bed very late, after 1 a.m.

Today I wanted to go horseback riding, to make one of my dreams come true. So I would have been ready, but the horses weren’t. That’s why we had to postpone the plans. Friday is going to be a rainy day but maybe on the weekend... There’s just one certainty: If I can’t go horseback riding, I won’t go back home.

For lunch, we had an American sandwich as usual, and of course a slice of watermelon.

If I hadn’t been that lazy, I would have gone for a bike ride. First I wanted to go to Woodstock by bike, doing some shopping, but as for an absolutely unsporty person (like me) a 14-mile ride might be a little bit too much.

Of course I could have tried to take only a short trail, but because I was so tired I decided to take a nap. This way maybe I will be fitter tomorrow. Part of the lessons in the morning is to watch Casablanca. First we always go over the words, then we watch some scenes. It takes a lot of time that way but what I can say so far is, that Humphrey Bogart, playing Rich, is an absolutely cool and smart person. A very interesting character. I can hardly wait to watch more. But there’s something else bothering me: Did all the cool guys die out during the last century? What a pity!

For dinner we had some leftovers. And Ernst could again try his luck with the hamburgers. They didn’t get burned this time. We had a nice fire and made some roasted marshmallows, too. That was fun to do! Actually the whole evening was funny. And it’s getting late again. After midnight already. Good night!

Friday, 6/25/04 – Sunday 6/27/04

Friday was our soup day. It seemed, Rose had been working on that homemade pea soup all day. We also had salad and for dessert short cake with strawberries.

O.k. what else can I remember? Was there anything special on Friday? I guess I went to the Mill once but besides this, I think nothing special happened. This doesn’t mean I wasn’t bored. I always have enough to do with my homework.

Saturday morning I missed going to an auction because I woke up just before 9 a.m. and Rose wanted to leave at 9. So I kept on sleeping and when I got awake I was just lying in my bed and thinking I like doing this.

I had a late breakfast and wrote some letters. In the afternoon I took a short bike ride. Just to make sure I can make it to Woodstock someday. Yes, that was the adventure for Saturday, a 45-minute bike ride.

For dinner we were sitting outside eating baked potatoes and fresh green salad and a big piece of meat. And we also roasted some marshmallows. My stomach was upset so it was more because I liked roasting the marshmallows than eating them. Just for the fun of it. It was very cold outside.

We went inside and started watching the first half of Casablanca. We had to wait for guests to arrive anyway. Oh, poor Rick, if only I could help you. Ilsa left him heartbroken once and it seems she might do it again. I went to bed very late.

On Sunday I slept until 9 a.m. I guess. I was lying and thinking again and after a late but bigger breakfast than usual, I checked my e-mails.

Today was my big day: horseback riding was on the list. I had been nervous all morning. At 1 p.m. Ernst and I left and arrived at the stables too early.

I was getting nervous more when I saw other people sitting on their horses. At 2:15 p.m. it was our turn. Ernst was coming with me. We had booked a trail ride for one hour. There were just the two of us and two guides. I got a horse named Barney. Ernst got Soldier a very tall, light brown animal. My horse was a little bit smaller with brown-gray hair.

Once sitting on the horse I felt great, really. We started our trip. I was shocked when I saw the trail going straight downhill. Oh, no! We had to cross the creek and go uphill on the other side. It was a small trail with a lot of stones and wood lying on the ground and I felt a little bit anxious and unsafe at the beginning.

What to do if I fall off?" I really had to concentrate all the time. I wasn’t even looking to the left or the right side, just straight ahead. Not that I didn’t feel comfortable sitting up high. I wanted to follow Barney’s rhythm. It wasn’t that easy. Everything was so new for me. I decided to trust my Barney. He knew best which way to go.

I was impressed by the horse’s sensibility. I only had to pull the reins a little bit and Barney followed my wish. Either left or right. When you pulled the reins, the horse stopped immediately. It’s unbelievable actually I enjoyed the horseback riding very much. I hope I can go there again. I’m so glad I did it.

Although I must have looked like a complete idiot with this helmet I was wearing. And maybe I should mention that I can hardly sit or walk now. There are some parts of my body that hurt. Never mind.
