Jacqueline's Report July 2005
Golden Gate Summer School
in Bridgewater, Vermont, USA

Last July I visited The Golden Rose Bed & Breakfast in Bridgewater Vermont. I was far away from home and from my family. I used the time to improve my English and to visit a place I heard so much from my English teacher Rosie Dobler. I was very curious about Vermont.

Every morning  we were in the classroom in Rosie’s Golden house and  had three English lessons together. At my time there we were three students, Salomé, Veronica and I.  Of course we needed one or two breaks during the morning. We had a cup of coffee or tea and sat on the porch for a few minutes.  The porch was my absolute favourite place. Almost every day the sun laughed in our faces when we were on the porch.

In the afternoon we took a trip to a place we didn’t know or to experience something. Once we went to Woodstock and visited a pretty estate from a family called Rockefeller. They donated their estate to Woodstock before they died. It’s an interesting family story over three generations from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. We could see the biggest house inside and saw how they lived with all the rooms. They had some other and smaller houses on their estate. And there is a beautiful and colourful garden with several flowers and plants. It’s a place that everyone must see. I was enthusiastic about this special place.

Another day we drove to Rutland. Outside the town is an airport. Veronica landed there, when she came to Bridgewater. We went shopping and walked through Rutland. We made a stop at a candy shop and bought some sweets. It was a real women's afternoon. I enjoyed it very much.

Saturday, the 23rd of July we took a trip to the Atlantic Ocean. Rose drove the convertible with we three women. We could enjoy the trip through a part of Vermont. First we ate a big breakfast at Hampton Beach. This is exactly the place we were. Then we made our shopping tour and at last we visited the sun and sandy beach. We finished our English homework and wrote postcards for family and friends.  I didn’t go swimming, the water was too cold for me. The water was maybe eighteen degrees or less. I slept for a few minutes in the sun and relaxed my mind. The dinner we ate was typical American food and we liked it. We returned late.

Once we visited a Rodeo which I found very exciting and interesting. It was the first time I saw a Rodeo live.

And one afternoon we spent our time at Echo Lake. We went swimming, ate an ice cream and of course, we did our homework.

Two days before I had to fly back home, Veronica and I decided to go hiking. There is a big skiing and hiking area near Bridgewater.  The name of this place is Killington.  That day the weather wasn’t very good, it was cloudy and muggy, but warm. However we wanted to go and put our best shoes on. Rosie drove us and she said she would pick us up at 5:30 p.m. Ok first we went to the Information center but it was closed. So we couldn’t get a hiking map. We started to walk and took the first way we saw. After 10 minutes we knew it was the wrong way. So we started again with a second way. Soon after we could see that it was a direct way to the top. That is to say the steepest way and goes through a jungle with big plants, flowers and a meadow with insects. It was hard for us because we never knew where we are. In the end we achieved our goal. The view could have been better. In any case we were happy to be on the top of the hill. The restaurant was closed so we took only a short rest. Then we looked for the way down. We probably changed the route several times . Finally we took the longest way back. And Rosie was waiting for us for about an hour. That day was very good for my body and my mind.
